Marlon Sobol, MT-BC, LCAT
Having
a father who is a master clarinetist and concert producer along with
a mother who is a concert pianist, as well as a music teacher for special
learners, it was a natural career choice for Marlon Sobol to become a
professional musician and board certified music therapist. Sobol fuses
his passion for music with his ability to empathize and care for people.
As Manager of the Institute for Music and Neurological Function at Schnurmacher
Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Marlon runs music therapy programs
for people with dementia, cancer, depression, diabetes, and aphasia.
Sobol earned his BFA at the New
School for Jazz and Contemporary Music where he studied percussion with Bobby
Sanabria and Charlie Persip. He
was also the first student to go through the Creative Arts Therapy Program.
Sobol has been featured in numerous publications including "DRUM!" Magazine (June 2007), the "Journal News" (February 2007), and "Preserving
Your Memory" Magazine (Spring 2008).
As a professional musician, Marlon Sobol has shared the stage with many
musical legends including Richie Havens, David Amram, Candido
Camero,
as well as pop reggae star Matisyahu. Sobol was featured on the Grammy
nominated album, "Youth". He has performed at Madison Square
Garden and appeared on the Carson Daly Show.
In 2006 Marlon Sobol was a drum circle facilitator with Mickey Hart
and Christine Stevens. He opened the presentation for the "Living
Well with Dementia" Conference in June 2008. Sobol demonstrated
his drum circle facilitation ability in "Rhythmic Activities for
Everyday Care", an instructional DVD sponsored by the New York State
Department of Health. His original composition "Banks to the River" was
the featured soundtrack.
Marlon is the co-founder of Sobol Bros Productions and Kingdom
Strong Records. He is the leader of NYC based Hip-Hop/Reggae band Shem's Disciples
where he composes, produces, and arranges the music. As a multi-instrumentalist,
Sobol plays congas, djembe, drumset, melodica, and vibraphone. He sings,
raps, dances and goes where the music takes him! He released his debut
album "Sow Melodic" in 2007.
