Juan L. Picorelli
Juan
L. Picorelli was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1983. At the tender
age of four he played drums for his church. Taught by his father and
uncles, Juan learned how-to play bongos, congas, and timbales. Juan went
on to study percussion with Santiago
'Chago' Martinez at Escuela Libre
de Musica, a well-respected music school in Puerto Rico.
While still in school Picorelli was a member of a dance band directed
by Mariano Morales. He was also fortunate enough to perform with Gilberto
Santa Rosa. At the age of sixteen he became a band member for Salsa Christian
duo, David & Abraham, later he became musical director for the group.
During this time, he also performed with Alex D' Castro, Ezequiel Colon,
Jorge 'Piro' Romero, Jose 'Papo' Rivera, among others.
From 2003 through 2005, Juan was a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra
of Puerto Rico. Soon afterwards, he performed with many notable artists
including Victor Manuelle, Michael Stuart, Cano Estremera, Lalo Rodriguez,
Elias Lopes, Domingo Quinones, Rey Ruiz, N'klabe, Tito Nieves, Frankie
Negron, Plena Libre, NG2 to mention just a few.
During his career, Picorelli has recorded for various Christian and
secular artists including Abraham Velazquez (El Mejor Regalo), Jose Ferrer
(Raices Coros De Siempre), Merly Hernandez (Donde Nacera Mi Hijo), Anthon
(No Te Puedo Olvidar), Lunny Tunes (Mas Flow 2), and NG2 (Al Fin y Con
Todas Las De Ganar) and many others. Juan has also served as musical
director for numerous groups including NG2, Maelo Ruiz, Alex D'Castro,
Moncho Rivera, and Kayvan Vega.
Picorelli currently lives in Chicago where he has had the opportunity
to perform with Aretha Franklin, Luisito Carrion, Eddie Santiago, Tony
Vega, Johnny Rivera, Lefty Perez, Van Lester, Ismael Miranda, Frankie
Morales, Paquito Acosta, Kevin Ceballo, Wichie Camacho, Hector Tricoche.
Presently he is a member of Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble and the
bandleader for Pa' la Rumba, a new Salsa band with an old school sound.
